Process & Transformation

HAA 96A Architecture Studio I: Transformations

This semester-long project is divided into 5 stages: Operations, Patterns, Intensities, Volume, and Program.

Stage 1. Operations

This project starts with 8 Operations: verbs interpreted into paper sculptures, held together in absence of adhesives. From the set of models, the operation of “perforating” is chosen for further development.

Stage 2. patterns

In Patterns, layered cutouts from “perforating” operation are translated onto stacked plexiglass. Then, 4 modules are assembled together to form a symmetrically patterned block.

Stage 3. intensities

In Intensities, the z-axis is explored with particular attention to enclosed void spaces. Cardstock and the CSP technique are used to produce two orientations.

Stage 4. volume

In Volume: density, scale, and a cohesive narrative are explored to produce several iterations.

Stage 5. program

The final iteration is assigned to a site in Cambridge, MA, to develop a program. As the location is near the center of Harvard Square, the previously abstract volume is newly given the purpose of a “community recreation center”. Spaces are allocated for sports, relaxation, recreation, as well as outdoor entertainment and public passage in the open areas.

This project has come full circle in maintaining forms of perforation with the potential to also be functional.
